A Primer On Facelift Surgery Procedures

As people age, their skin begins to lose some of its elasticity, resulting in sagging. This is especially true about the skin around the facial area. Instead of just dealing with it or trying to age gracefully, you can actually do something about it. Getting a facelift surgery is one way to reverse the signs of ageing and feel better about yourself.

What is Facelift Surgery

Facelift surgery is technically know as a meloplasty, and it is a surgery that requires a licensed surgeon to perform. You should find a reputable, experienced plastic surgeon who has a lot of experience specifically with facelift surgery, since this is a very precise procedure that requires knowledge of the facial skin and muscles to perform. What the doctor does during the procedure is lift the skin off of your face first and foremost. Then the tissue underneath is tightened, which gives the appearance of a younger, more taut face once the skin is put back on. Excess skin is trimmed off for a smooth, seamless look. It can take years or even decades off your face in a short amount of time.

Who Can Get Facelift Surgery

The people who get this procedure the most are usually elderly adults over the age of 50 years old. However, as long as you are at least 18 years of age, you can get it done. As with any surgical procedures, there are some risks involved since you do have to have anesthesia. That is why most doctors will only take you if you are in good physical health, and with no mental health issues as well. If you smoke, you will likely be asked to quit at least two weeks before, since smoking can complicate your recovery. You should also abstain from alcohol, as this can also complicate things unnecessarily.

Before Your Facelift Surgery

Before you are cleared to get it done, your plastic surgeon must clear you medically. This means you will visit them at their office and let them do a full check up on you. They will ask about preexisting conditions and any previous surgeries you may have had. They will go through every step of the process with you, and perhaps use a marker to mark the places where they will have to cut.

Types of Facelift Surgery

The first and most popular type is a traditional lift, which tightens the SMAS layer of your tissue. This one particularly focuses on the jowl area, as well as the cheeks and neck. A deep plane lift is similar, but this one also focuses on nasolabial folds in order to give you longer lasting results, which many people desire. Finally, a thread lift is actually not a surgical procedure at all. Instead of cuts from a scalpel, small sutures are strategically placed in order to support any skin or tissue that is sagging. This is a much more subtle change, but still takes several years off your face and makes you look younger without the invasiveness of a traditional or deep plane lift.

After Your Facelift Surgery

When you wake up from the anaesthesia, your face will have some bandages on it, so do not be alarmed. After a day or two, your doctor will remove these and also the drainage tube that usually has to be placed in order to keep the wounds dry. Do not mess with these until you see your doctor for your post-surgical follow-up sessions. Doing so could hinder your recovery and make it much longer than it needs to be.

Medications and Pain Management

You will have some pain afterwards, just as with any procedures where scalpels are involved. In addition, there will be some swelling and bruising as well. You do not have to suffer though, as your doctor can easily prescribe you some painkillers to help alleviate the pain and make you feel better as you recover. In addition, they may suggest using cold compresses to help reduce swelling and bruising as well.

Recovery From Your Facelift Surgery

After two days or so, your bandages and drainage tube will be removed. A week or two after that, you can expect the bruising and swelling to go down significantly. Although the swelling will not actually completely subside for up to six months, it subsides so much after two to three weeks that most people besides yourself or your doctor, will not be able to tell there is any swelling at all. That is why most people take two to three weeks off of work to have a lift done, that way when they return, there is no sign of having had anything done.
